Preventing exhaust rust?
Is there such a thing? I recently coated my exhaust with high temp. anti seize from Sanel Auto Parts, but, as expected, most flaked off and already it started to slightly rust. (I’ve only had the car for one year and a stainless/chrome system is out of the question.) I live in an area with salt and snow. I understand that exhaust systems rust from the inside out, but it there something I can apply that will at least keep the outer surfaces as rust free as possible?
Lots of luck. Salt is a catalist for the oxygenation of iron (rust). Your car’s exhaust is mostly carbon dioxide, which is usually inert to tail pipe chemistry. The extra parts, however, is water and some nitrogen-based acids, among other things like carbon monoxide, the incompletely burned oxygen-carbon chemistry that could happen simply from a quick acceleration. The acid will etch the metal in chemically vulnerable places. As soon as you switch your car off, oxygen from the air wafts back in (and the water of your environment’s air) and begins to help the rusting along. I’ve heard of some high temperature plastic coatings, never used one though, but part of the trick as I recall is the coating has to cure, as in fully solidify. The flaky peeling was from cracking and incomplete bonding to the metal. That means, as I suspect at least, that the air was probably too humid or the curing time was too rushed. Try it again, on a dryer day and let it rest a little longer (make sure the pipe is really cool when you start).
